LINDA LAMIGNAN
GATHER & GRIND
HD video, 06:00min, 2020
What would technology look like if we erase the history of colonialism? Where the resources used to develop technological objects were not ressources of theft and unfair distribution. Where the labour needed to produce technological objects were not based on slave labour and exploitation. The being in this video is seen as the first in this new techno consciousness.
Xe gathers and grinds the beginning of knowledge, creating the footing for the technologies to come. This character is played by Aida Aslaksen Rønvik, who also designed an outfit for the work. In collaboration with Kristoffer Amundsen, we build 3d animations using existing open source technology to form the visuals of this new world. The music produced for the videos is inspired by techno music, referencing the techno scene that arises from the hard life of the black communities in post industrial Detroit. Turning the sounds and beats into a soundtrack for the imagined post capitalist era.

Linda Lamignan is a visual and performance artist whose work tells stories about the experience of floating in between different worlds. Through video, music, objects and performance, Lamignan explores notions relating to wandering and diaspora, transformation
and love. With an animistic approach, they work with materials connected to the industries in West Africa and Scandinavia, and by connecting the history of those materials/commodities to bodies with similar experiences, Lamignan seeks out to envision new alternative states.
